Hi - ( and camera question)

Hi,

Just a new lurker reading as much possible before I book in for AFF.

Have a question about wearing cameras... and that question is... whats up with the rules governing camera wearage?

This is from APF...

Quote

	DIVISION 5 – CAMERA DESCENTS

11.5.1 Approval by DZSO All Camera Descents must be made only with the approval of a DZSO.
11.5.2 Minimum Experience A Parachutist must not carry a camera during a descent unless:
a) The Parachutist holds at least a Certificate ‘C’; and
b) The DZSO has given approval for the Parachutist to carry the camera concerned.
11.5.3 AFF Camera
A Parachutist must not carry a camera on an AFF descent unless the Parachutist holds at least a Certificate ‘D’.
11.5.4 Audible Altimeter
a) A Parachutist on any type of Freefly descent must wear a functioning audible altimeter. b) The altimeter must be: (i) Approved by the ASO or Chief Instructor, (ii) Mounted so that it is clearly audible throughout the descent; and (iii) Set to indicate the height above the DZ.

...can someone clarify it?

You can't wear any type of camera until you obtain a cert C?

Could someone explain the certification/liscense levels - I've only read up on the American system thus far.

Thanks.

Outsiders Perspective.

Dear All Instructors.

I know this does'nt mean much, but here goes. I watched a show the other night on accidents in extreme sports, In the show there was a skydiving section, where a young lady after doing several Tandems, decided to do her AFF, with her boyfriend as the instructor, all went well until deployment, and seeing it through the head cam of the instructor-boyfriend, she had a mal, and could not cutaway, something to do with the breaks, going into a deep left hand spiral and doing so all the way to the ground, carpark, where she landed with a pop. This was all caught on footage and through her boyfriends cam, he landed nearby cursing the world and crying, she lived!, after seven operations her face was reconstructed and she looks good and is jumping again.

I now know why My instructor was yelling during my plummet to the ground, and why he is such a great DUDE, I needed to say SORRY to Mr D G and the Crew at Byron, as he was always nice to me, and the APF has certainly trained him well and picked the right man for the job, it a credit to you all, as well as the team at Byron, whom are in my eyes a terrific team of professionals whom do things that no-one on the planet comes near too.

You guys are excellent humans and that's about it, anyway.

HAPPY JUMPING.

My N3 has recorded two extra jumps compared to my Protrack. When I got the N3, I made sure they were in line before I started jumping. I always jump with both devices - ProTrack as audible, N3 as visual on arm.

Now, I have found one jump on the N3 to have an exit & deployment height identical (5450ft), with FF & CF times of 0s 1043s respectively. I am assuming this is one of the "extra" jumps recorded which I never did. Interestingly enough, this was listed as my last jump in Eloy prior to jumping in Nagambie next, so if could be the ride inside the A380 home when the cargo hold was pressurised.

Now - before I delete this jump, and go looking for the other suspect entry. I have two questions:

1) If this was a hop & pop and a "real" jump, would it register an FF time of 0? I would still assume that the CF time would be something.
2) has anyone else seen similar behaviour?

Phantom Vs Shadow

I have around 8 wingsuit jumps. I was about to order a Shadow, but I'm beginning to think Phantom after a discussion with Tozer last night. I haven't yet managed to jump the shadow with straight arms, I'm sure I'll get over this, but with no grippers I've got 'flying hands' and it's encouraging me to bend my arms to slow down - old habits die hard I guess.

Has anyone got any experience flying both these suits, or anyone with a Phantom who can give me some of their thoughts from flying it?? Phoenix Fly's website says it's an intermediary suit, but they also recommend it as suitable for a FFC, so it doesn't seem inappropriate for me.

Cheers for any comments or advice.......

So i did my first tandem skydive back about a year ago in Byron Bay (my home town), Never felt so pumped after it. I started asking about path i had to partake to do it solo. Not that i lost interest, just with work commitments and being away all the time didnt get much time to look more into it. Now im currently serving on operations with the army overseas, so on my spare time all i seem to be doing in researching about it all. Im very keen to get into this sport/industry meet some new people and learn!
99% of you all seem very welcoming.
anyway a little bit about my self, im 22. From Byron Bay, thinking about doing my course somewhere more inland though to get away from the coastal winds that like to stick around. Hope to learn off you all!
Did 2 AFFs, 2 B-Rels and 3 TAs. Oh, and also did lots of waiting for the bloody ATC to give us clearances. Apparently they're short-staffed and couldn't cope.

A license costs

Hi

After recently passing the 40th mark and surviving a long stint in ICU my wife thought it might be a good idea to jump out of a plane and gave me a gift certificate for Sydney Skydivers.

I'm probably not content to just do a tandem so Im wondering at a high level what the costs are to get in to the sport.

I see jumps are around the $42 mark generally if you don't buy in bulk how much does gear hire set you back?

AFF Fast Track with 3 Jumps is $760 (is this AFF stage 1?)

They have listed AFF stages 2-8 @ $195 including gear hire is this per stage ?

Is there a ball park for an A licence and other training programs after your A licence

I guess the sky really is the limit

Thanks in advance

Common sense and over regulation

Ok I am bored and seem to be on my soapbox atm - feel free to abuse me.

I jump mainly at USPA dropzones and have had a lot fun. I have little experience with non USPA dropzones but what I read and hear is disturbing. The amount of over regulation is crazy. Some countries requiring 500 jumps (Belgium being one such country I believe) to jump sub120 canopies. Norway bans gear for no real good reason (you can't jump your triathlon there and you can't even go for a solo freefly unless you have been signed off) and Australia and England seem to want people to have a rating to fart.

What about common sense? It begins with good education. It then needs someone to pursue improvement and seek further knowledge and to learn from past mistakes and be able to make objective decisions based on this information. Instead of writing rules all the time what about people speaking out when something is suspect instead of waiting for something bad to happen and then making a rule. It should also be paired with personal responsibility.

As a skydiving adult do you need someone/an organisation to tell you what you should and shouldn't do? I do a fair amount of belly but would I go on a 300 way? Hell no. I could probably land a velo 120 if I got lucky, should I buy one? Hell no. Do I have a problem with a 70jump jumper trailing a 20way tracking dive after a detailed briefing which has let everyone know everyones elses abilities and discussed all relevant information? Hell no. Is an AFF instructor at a major DZ going to get an ass chewing for organising a 17way with 7 jumpers with less than 50 jumps? Hell yes.

Most people laugh at Americas sue anyone for anything mantality and sure some people take it too far and abuse it but what I am realising is that it allows, or is atleast meant to, people a chance to exercise some common sense and if or when they fail at doing that they become liable for their lack of common sense. I.e. released a drug with known side effects, watched people die, kept marketing drug (both showing a lack of common sense) becomes liable and is sued out of existence.

But hey I am just some 500 jump wonder who thinks he knows everything and is too stupid to listen to anyone :S

Please feel to correct me if I am wrong on any of the above regulations, some are just from general discussion had with jumpers from all over the world at the bar/reading internet forums (sack of salt included).

skydive video footage

Sorry for opening a new thread for each question.
I'm comparing all skydive centers in Australia. Prices, advantages and disadvantages.
For a large amount of centers it's a big hassle to find out whether they offer DVD footage from a distance or that they only record via handycam.
Handycams just film your face and some of the surroundings but they fail to show your speed while falling.

I would appreciate it if someone could sum up some centers across the nation where they definitely offer a more distant video footage.
Airlie Beach seems to be the most breathtaking place on earth but their center doesn't have enough staff for someone else to record my jump from underneath

I was considering doing my first jump in York.
I'm not familiar with the Australian dollar but thought it was relatively weak compared to our euros.

On the site it says that a jump from 8000ft costs $300. A video (I don't want a handy cam but one that records from a distance) costs $149.
At least that's what I assume

http://www.skydive.com.au/html/tandem.html

I hope they don't mean it's $269 for the distant view I want. I don't need a handycam shot of my face until we reach the ground

I just entered $300 + $150 in a currency converter and it's 362 euros.
362 euros is the price of a one way airplane ticket from Belgium to USA.
The average monthly wage in Belgium is $2000 so this one short experience represents almost a week of work.

Is this a normal price? Can I jump much cheaper elsewhere in the country?
I want to push my limits but I find this price pretty ridiculous to be honest. I can buy a new laptop with that money

Crash sparks call for better skydiver education
By Kirsty Nancarrow
Posted January 24, 2012 11:48:01

The Australian Parachute Federation (APF) has recommended more education for skydivers after an investigation into an accident in far north Queensland last year.
Matt Lynam from Mackay spent several months in hospital after he crashed during a competition at Tully last September.
Brad Turner from the APF says it was the 27 year old's first competition and an investigation has confirmed he misjudged his final approach.
"Recommendations are for the ongoing education of people's awareness of where they exit aircraft and also checking the conditions of the weather," Mr Turner said.
"I mean obviously we are at the mercy of the weather.
"With parachutes we don't have power - we don't have propellers and engines to get us out of trouble."
Mr Lynam crashed onto a road about two kilometres from the drop zone.
Mr Turner says he suffered serious head and leg injuries.
"They found that unfortunately the jumper had made an error in his judgment in his final approach to landing," he said.
"Perhaps he could have made a decision higher up to find a better choice of landing area.
"Unfortunately getting closer to the ground we assume he might have tried to avoid powerlines and turned his parachute a bit too quickly."

Rule #1 No Poofters!
This is why this country has descended to almost 3rd world status because it is being run by women who want to be men and men who should be women!!
The Gay Mardi Gras! F@#K ME. Sydney is the second Gay city of the world next to San Francisco The ANZACs would be apalled.I for one don`t want people seeing a few "skydivers" mincing (soldiers march poofters mince) down the street and thinking we are all like that just because we wear tight suits. Now I know all you liberated types are going to hate me and send me spiteful thoughts and messages but I don`t F@#K%$G care.Rule #1 NO POOFTERS!!!

Stolen from Jacqui Brewer's FaceBook post:

Quote

Good Day CP Competitors,

The IPC CP Committee are proposing changes to the Distance and Speed rules in order to allow more drop zones throughout the world to host CP competitions and to ensure that these competitions can be conducted safely. We are also looking at the major injuries caused to competitors and this has contributed to some of the decisions that will be made over the next 2 weeks.

Speed:
• Straight course
• Dragging of water from entry gate to gate 4
• Score to be 0 if no dragging

Distance:
• Dragging of water on entry gate
• No other water contact allowed
• Competitor to stay below 1.5 meter mark between gate 1 and 5
• Gate 5 to be 14 meters apart from gate 4 and may be on land or water
• VE to competitors not staying within the 1.5 meter mark resulting in a 0 score
• Competitors landing between the entry gate and water gate #2 shall receive a result of 10 metres; between water gate #2 and water gate #3, 20 metres; between water gate #3 and water gate #4, 30 metres; and between water gate #4 and course marker #5, 40 metres.

It should be noted that these rules are NOT APPROVED yet and will only be approved during the IPC Plenary in Buenos Aires during February, coming into effect the 1st of March 2012. Only if these rules are accepted at the Plenary, will the records be retired and open to the setting of new records.

We are aware of the discussions that took place in Klatovy and have received many more suggestions afterwards and at the Dubai Cup. Many of the proposed changes were not destined for implementation this year but due to the long training season prior to the Mondial, it was decided to make use of this excellent opportunity for Pilots to train and familiarise themselves with the rules. There is normally only a 6 month period to train between rule changes and the next IPC competition. This year being the exception, it makes perfect sense to allow all level of pilots to get the necessary training prior to the World Championships.

It is important to realise that with change comes resistance and It will take time for everyone, judges included to familiarise themselves with the new rules. I hope this answers some of your questions.

Technical Directives

I'm a bit out of the loop nowadays. Who receives technical directives?

Just discovered that one went out this week which has a special relevence to people with a C licence or above. I'm not arguing the principle. It's the communication that's the issue here.

If it affects us all, it should either be in the Op Regs - the document we ALL use - or it should be sent to every relevant licence holder as soon as possible, until it CAN be incorporated into the next Op Regs.

I respect the APF's right to make rules. I just want them to respect my right to know about rules that apply to me!

Strangely enough, I have better things to do with my time than go surfing through never visited pages of the website!

Come march in MARDI GRAS!

Hi all,

A few of us are considering putting a skydivers float into Mardi Gras this year to show support for the LGBT community among us.

The initial application has been accepted by the Mardi Gras organisers and now it’s just a matter of getting a decent group of people to march. For our first year, it’s going to be pretty simple – just marching in rigs under a banner that says something along the lines of Gravity doesn’t discriminate.

The parade is in Sydney on 3rd March. You don’t need to be gay/bi etc to march, just be supportive of the message.

We want a minimum of fifteen skydivers to join in. If you haven’t been to Mardi Gras before, it’s one hell of an awesome party and I can only imagine how much more awesome it would be to be part of it rather than squashed in the crowds watching it.

Check out the Facebook event at https://www.facebook.com/events/172390922866968/ and add yourselves to it if you can commit.

Hope to have a huge party with some of you there!
Parachuting enthusiast Megan Thorpe broke both femurs in May 2011 when she turned her parachute too low to the ground at Elderslie airfield.
She was flown to John Hunter Hospital and spent almost three weeks in hospital, which was followed by months of rehabilitation.
"It was human error, just bad judgment on my part," she said.
"Even just a couple of days after the accident I was determined it would not stop me."
Ms Thorpe returned to skydiving on Saturday against doctor's orders and jumped eight times at the weekend.
"Technically I hadn't got the all clear but I felt in myself I was able to land," she said.
"It was fantastic, it was like going back on a drug.
"It was what I had been waiting for for the past 7? months."
Ms Thorpe has been skydiving for the past two years and has 360 jumps under her chute.
She said her first jump went well, until she was about to land.
"Coming into the landing I was reliving the accident," she said.
"Just telling yourself don't stuff it up.
"Once I did the first jump it was just back to normal."
