Hi

just thought i'd say
i love this place
i've been reading up and sucking it in most of the day on this forum.
i cant seem to get enuff information about this stuff.
im hooked in bad it seems  :)

i remember the same buzz of excitement years back when getting into dirtbikes.
also i remeber the overwhelming sensation once discovering its not all fun and games...i.e maitenance, bush breakdowns, flats, injury, lak of fitness etc....
the thing being its not for everyone which is one thing im gathering from this forum goes the same for skydiving in its own way.

but dont panic.....
just to be clear,im not shying away by any means.
i reckon i'l love it.

so many questions and querys already tho.
seems further investigation just brings more questions  hahahah
whats does AAD stand for?
what does a 120 main acualy mean ? (obviously a chute measurement of some sort)
what is a cypress/vigel?
what does a hook knife look like
how does a chute open....some sort of spring mechanism  ;)
and heaps more

hahahah
some of them are silly i realise ;)
but im sure you get the picture
and im prety sure i'l get all the answers when i do my course and start getting some 'hands on'  but its all prety exciting for me now  :)

anyway i guess what im tryen to say is i love your work here guys.
this place is awsome.

cheers.

p.s. this seemed like a good idea at the time  :)  howeva i reserve the right to edit in the morning once im sober.....  hehehehe

here goes.
AAD - Automatic activation device.
120 main means 120 square feet in size. Now i dont want to hear u mention a 120 again until u have 1000 jumps...
cypres and vigil are 2 AAD manufacturers, the two most popular i think,
hook knife looks like a .. oh just go to paragear and do a search.
Most main chutes are open by a smaller chute called a pilot chute. u throw the pilot chute into the airstream and it inflates and pulls the closing pin on your container out and ejects the bag that your main canopy is in and hopefully you end up with a good inflated main canopy. (there may be some dz's around still using spring loaded designed pilot chutes but that is fairly rare i believe these days.). This is how your reserve will work, the pilot chute has a spring in it so it springs out into the air.
hope this helps and the only silly question is the one u dont ask. cheers and good night.

don't mention a 120 again till you have 1000 jumps?? common that is a bit of a strange thing to say. You don't know his weight or anything. There are people with ~600 safely jumping <100 x-brace canopies with 550 dedicated canopy jumps ... there are people with 400 jumps jumping V4s and Xbird windsuits and are flying rings around jumpers with 1000s of jumps. The attitude toward progression and 'safety' in some countries seems to be so ass backward that it stunts learning and it has been annoying me for ages. Im not saying someone with less than 1000 jumps should be on a 120 but I am not saying they shouldn't be either ... I'll be on a 120 at about the 500 jump mark - it has been suggested I be in that area now with 350 jumps - it will just be a docile seven cell or zpx square of some sort so I can make it back from long spots/big wingsuit jumps...

rant over.

Not really relevant to someone that's done one tandem 15 years ago, dude.

I think giving new jumpers a very very conservative picture of canopy progressions is a clever thing to do. We need to start instilling safe ideas of canopy suitability from the start and giving them lower expectations on what they could possibly jump is an excellent way forward. Surely a low expectation that turns out to be wrong is way safer than a high expectation that turns out to be wrong.

e.g

"everyone's been saying a 120 would be fine for someone of my size and experience" - SPUD!!!

OR

"everyone's been saying I should stay on a 210 until 500 jumps" - shit that canopy ride was way longer than everybody else's.

Notice the difference there?

Now, if they happen to be one of the very few tiny people who might need a smaller canopy to get a reasonable wing loading early on in their career, then I'm sure they would work that out in time under supervision. They don't need to be thinking that way now.

Anyway, chooc sounds pretty heads up and is asking questions, so I'm sure he'll take many opinions before he makes decisions.

Look forward to hearing how you go mate... keep us posted.

You're agreeing with me... or i'm agreeing with you :S There is no point putting some on a canopy, in a wingsuit or in a formation that will injure them but setting arbitrary numbers for anything is stupid. If someone can't land a canopy in any direction, or isn't atleast learning to do that, shouldn't be on that canopy  I have watched people with 600 jumps swoop the shit out of their 94 velo and others with pro ratings and D licences plough through 8 ways 3 jumps in a row. People progress differently for a bunch of different reasons but saying because someone doesn't have 'x' jumps they can't do 'x,y and z' is stupid.

the flip side is sadly there are stupid people doing stupid shit all the time but you can't fix stupid...

You'll find it takes very little to start a serious discussion (aka "war") on ss.c.a

Stay open-minded, respect the opinions of your instructors, and if you're ever uncertain speak to your CI.

Don't assume every piece of advice here is relevant to you. Be cautious, research lots (using Australian and overseas skydiving websites), and when it comes to equipment have a look  at the manufacturer's websites. They often have manuals and other downloadable info which is essential to your safety.

Well said, Terry.

There is alot of shit on here that you shouldn't listen to. Having said that there is also alot of valuable information here too.

When you start your adventure, and when you see and hear things first hand you'll be able to see more clearly those who are full of shit and those who have some great experience to share.

Some wanker saying 'I dont want to hear you say 120 until 1000 jumps' is not going to help. You'll soon discover what canopy sizes are suitable. And you will be a better skydiver than him anyway so 1000 jumps might not be relevant. ;)

Get amongst it, experience it, get yourself right in there and you'll have yourself positioned for a great start in this awesome sport.

:-)
