Hey guys, ive got a fair bit of Cash saved up and im doing my AFF soon, i know this is something i want to pursue, so im starting to look for a rig while i have the money handy and so i dont spend it all on :beer_mug: .  So with that said im 80kg and about 177cm tall, could someone be so kind and point us in the right direction with what i should be looking at :) looking towards 2nd hand from what i have read but if need be can go down the brand new road...

Keep the money in a seperate account if you have to, and when you've started your AFF, speak to your instructors, they would be the best people to get advice from on what to look for in a rig.

No hurry. You need your Certificate "A" before you can jump your own gear. Don't get signed up for something before you've had a good look around... bring your opportunities here for discussion if you need to. There are some sharks in the swimming pool.

hrrmmm rightio then....
readen this thread it seems the best go is to buy a rig sooner than later from a long term cost perspective.
soooo..........

im 85kg
173cm tall.

now they tell me at the dz for my experience i should be lookin at a 190 main......this sound about right???

also i been looking around a few sites.....now as far as i can work out ya need 4 things for new complete rig....is this right?
please corect me if im wrong.
1.main
2.reserve
3.AAD
4. harness/container......i assume these come with everything ya need yeah??   i.e. cables, handles, etc.

also what are the respectable/trustworthy sites yas use?
am i better off just ordering through the dz so i dont gotta deal with it?

looks like around the 7k mark .....is this reasonable?

cheers

7k for all new gear sounds about right give or take

i wouldn't buy all new gear as a first rig, but lots of people do. if youve got the budget go for it.
othewise troll through the classifieds here, the apf site and even dropzone.com
ask around at your dropzone as well
might be able to pickup something a fair bit cheaper and then you can spend the savings on jump tickets
i know of a rig thats about 2 or 3 years old. but it has a 215 F-111 main. 90 jumps on the entire setup. retired jumper who can't jump anymore due to injury. if that interests you PM me i'll put you in touch with the seller :)

I would say spend the money on a good container that will let you downsize a few times, and get a bargain on a second hand main, then when your ready to get the size that you will stay on for ages all you need is the main.

Containers don't let you downsize (put a smaller canopy inside) (safely) too many times.
But yes, if you can choose, go tight, not loose, so a couple of smaller sizes should fit ok. Ask a local rigger for fitting and airworthiness opinions and your CI for approval :)

yes, but a good container may get you two or three downsizes, which could mean five years out of your container, depending how quickly you're downsizing. mine suits a 170-190, but I have a 210 squeezed in safely, so i can use the same container for many years to come.

... but always talk to your CI and figure out you goals are with reagards to canopies, then you can make a decision as to what to buy. no point buying a rig if you're going to downsize in 50 jumps

I have a Pilot 188 and absolutely love it. It is my first canopy I have bought and even though experience is somewhat limited with other canopies I still recommend it highly to anyone.

Flares nicely, set up brilliantly for newbies and if you are a shit packer like myself it is very forgiving in the opening as well :P

Due to the actual jump numbers I am able to do I will probably own this canopy till its death as it suits me perfectly and I see no reason to downsize. But If I ever did I would definitely get another Pilot.

While were on the subject I may as well ask for some advice. What is the maximum wing loading a novice should be jumping? I was aiming around 1.1, but at an exit weight of 220 lbs (90kg + 10kg gear allowance) im finding it hard to find something suitable around the 200sqf mark. 170 seems to be alot easy to find but im worried the almost 1.3 wing loading would be to much. For reference my AFF and subsequent jumps have mostly been on a PD260 at .88 wingloading so I understand it is quite a jump. Do you think a 170 (at 1.3wl) would be an option I could talk to my CI about or am I dreaming?

I have lost near 15kg to get myself into skydiving and whilst I still intend to drop a bit more im not interested in getting under 85Kg (187lbs). I should reach this weight in the next couple of months which would put a 170 at 1.2wl.

I should mention that I am more then happy to jump a 200, its not like im rushing to get something aggressive but there just not that easy to find.

The guys at NZ Aerosport will be superhappy to make you a custom Safire 2 210 in no time :-)
The used market for big canopies is a bit slower, but keep poking around and the right canopy will show up. No point jumping too small just because you saw one used canopy that looked ok :)

Yeah Im going to talk to my CI tomorrow and get some opinions. Looking through the classifieds on drop zone it seems to me as if it may be easy to piece together a rig myself. There are a few canopies on there at the moment around the 200sqf mark, and even if I can't find a container to suit I think a new one would be justifiable if it could last at least one downsize.
